Singers ham up the chorus of ‘sweet smelling pirates'

Stokesley and District Choral Society (SDCS) hosted ’It’s Fun to Sing’ with Guest Conductor Tim Knight at Kirkby Church Hall on Saturday 23 June 2007. Tim was born in Northallerton and was a chorister at York Minster, he has been involved with choral direction and training across the UK and also in Canada, USA, Holland and Norway.

The event was a great success with more than fifty singers attending. Tim’s stimulating and challenging approach took singers by surprise. After loosening up physically they tried a range of music (from great choral works to nursery rhymes). Singers were encouraged to ‘think outside the box’ by adopting styles that they had never dreamt of at the start of the day. Have you ever tried to sing like an opera diva, a nun, a pirate or George Formby! Even the cosy arrangement of singing with similar voices was challenged as sopranos, basses, tenors and altos were all mixed together for some sessions! At the end of a great day all agreed that in future singing would be more adventurous, less inhibited and much more fun!
